Brisbane Obstetrician & Women’s Health Specialist
Pregnancy is an exciting and transformative chapter in your life – a time filled with anticipation, growth and the opportunity to positively shape long-term outcomes for your family.
Premium, Personalised Care
Dr James offers a premium, personalised service that supports women through every stage of pregnancy – whether your journey is straightforward or more complex. Dr James is experienced in both low and high-risk obstetrics and is committed to providing comprehensive, continuity-based care.
Dr James’ approach is collaborative and thorough, working closely with a network of trusted specialists – including Endocrinologists, Cardiologists, Neurologists and Psychiatrists – to ensure the best possible outcomes for you and your baby.
From your very first appointment to labour, birth and beyond, you’ll be cared for by the same familiar face, rather than rotating through different providers, as is often the case in other private obstetric models.
As a father himself, Dr James understands the pressures, uncertainties, and joys that come with pregnancy and parenthood. His care is warm, professional and always tailored to your individual needs.
With over a decade of experience in both public and private women’s healthcare, Dr James remains genuinely honoured to be part of every birth story.
Your Pregnancy Care Journey
- Availability & Cover
Dr James is on call for his patients throughout the week and is frequently contacted or working overnight. To ensure he can continue providing safe, high-quality care – and to spend time with his own family – he occasionally requires rest periods.
Dr James is a member of the Mater Hill Private Obstetricians group, a team of experienced and professional specialists who provide shared cover during weekends and holidays. On the rare occasion that Dr James is unavailable to be there for your birth, you can rest assured that one of his trusted colleagues will attend on his behalf.

Your Appointment Schedule
Most women will attend their first appointment with Dr James between 7-12 weeks for a dating scan where you will be able to see your baby and hear their heartbeat for the first time. This initial appointment typically is an hour in length and will cover common pregnancy concerns, diet, exercise and offer the opportunity for Dr James to answer questions or concerns that you may have.
Following your first visit, your usual schedule is:
- Every four weeks until 28 weeks gestation.
- Every two weeks from 28 to 36 weeks gestation.
- Weekly from 36 weeks gestation.
*Your schedule may be modified depending on your pregnancy and any health concerns to ensure you and your baby are safe.
Midwife and Support Services
- In-house Midwife Appointments: You will see our Midwife for two routine 40-minute appointments, typically around 28 weeks and again at 36 weeks. These sessions provide essential education on labour, birth preparation, breastfeeding, and common concerns.
- 24/7 Access to PAC: In addition to your regular appointments, you will have free of charge 24/7 access to the Pregnancy Assessment Centre (PAC) at Mater Mothers’ Hospital for urgent pregnancy-related complications or concerns (up to 6 weeks postnatal).
- State-of-the-Art Ultrasound: Dr James uses a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine during all antenatal appointments, capable of capturing high quality 3D images and videos. We are happy to print images of your baby, or if you bring a USB, we can record a video for you to take home.
- Our midwifery appointments are $120 with a Medicare rebate of $73.75
Postnatal Check Up
Six weeks after your baby’s birth, you will be invited to return for a postnatal check up with Dr James.
This visit is an opportunity to reflect on the changes your body has undergone during pregnancy and to discuss how you’re feeling as you transition into parenthood. While not essential, Dr James enjoys the opportunity to see both mum and baby together to share in this joyful time.
Bundle of Joy Card
When choosing to have your pregnancy care through Dr James you can access a range of valuable services at a discounted rate by purchasing a Bundle of Joy Premium or Bundle of Joy card. These cards offer great value by packaging together common maternity-related costs, helping to reduce out-of-pocket expenses that may not be covered by private health insurance or Medicare.
